Today, May 3, is our second annual Spring into Action day of giving! Last year we dedicated this day to our wonderful front-line staff and the work they do to help make a real difference. This year, we are highlighting our guests and residents by sharing a special story about Jerry.
In this work, we sometimes don’t know where life takes our residents and guests after they leave our programs but once in a while, they drop us a line. This time, a former resident sent us a handwritten letter!
Jerry was a resident of Dekko Place, one of our affordable housing programs located in downtown Seattle in the Westlake, Denny Triangle neighborhood. He lived there with his wife (who was one of the first residents of the building when it opened) and they loved their home.
“We were able to be a real family,” he said. “My wife was struggling with health issues and living at Dekko gave her a chance to live a dignified life. Having access to medical care, having our daughter visit – Compass was there for her and our family. Before she passed, she had good years, those years at Compass were a blessing.”
Jerry moved into another Compass building, the Karlstrom, and lived there until he moved out last year – into the new home that he purchased in Oregon. “I enjoyed every minute of living in the Karlstrom,” he said. “The staff were so helpful. I was able to save up enough and purchase my house in a small town in eastern Oregon. I’m living with a roommate and my cats.”
Our programs, whether it is emergency services, enhanced shelter, or affordable housing, meet people where they are. We walk alongside them as they determine their path. Our guests and residents are moving forward and with your financial support, they have the wind at their backs.
