Ronald Commons: One Year Later
Many of us don’t know our neighbors by name, much less stop by their homes for a cup of sugar. But nearly two years after Compass Housing opened Ronald Commons in Shoreline, the residents have developed community that grows stronger by the day.

Ronald Commons is home to 135 residents and includes families with pets, Veterans, and people with disabilities—and brings 60 permanent affordable housing units and supportive case management services to our community.

Corinne McKisson, Ronald Commons’ Program Manager, says that some residents have built relationships as neighbors without relying on staff members to encourage it. People who are scared of dogs have paused to greet a neighbor walking their pet, and started to break down their fear. Residents who are skilled with tools offer to put together beds and furniture for neighbors with children. Children living at Ronald Commons get to see adults with different jobs and skills—broadening future job possibilities in their minds.

Successes Large and Small
For parents with language or cultural differences, going to the school can be intimidating. Shoreline School District began sending staff to Ronald Commons to meet with parents where they live, creating more comfort for parents and helping school staff learn more about students’ home lives. Parents feel proud to show off their building and common areas that are decorated with the children’s art and photos of residents.

Stability and Growth Solidified
Now that some residents have stable permanent housing, they’ve been able to tackle chronic health issues, go back to school full-time, and obtain employment.

When concerns about housing are alleviated, potential and opportunity can be explored. Corinne tells the residents that each one of them has something to offer, and they all have value. “I always tell them I’m glad they came to a community event,'” says Corinne. “Little things make a big difference.”
